It explains the key terms used in the screener, how the four broad areas of SEND relate to the six practical areas considered here, and what the screener can—and cannot—tell you. Reading it first will help you understand the questions and use the results appropriately.

Try the latest screener prototype
We are currently testing and improving the next version of the Navigate SEND Access Screener.
The prototype in our portal builds on the same six practical areas introduced on this page: communication, learning, emotional wellbeing, adaptive agency, social behaviour and physical functioning. It uses your responses to generate a structured report highlighting possible strengths, barriers and areas that may be worth exploring further.
This is an early prototype and the report is only a guide. It is not a diagnosis, psychological assessment, legal assessment or decision about whether someone has SEND or is entitled to particular provision.
You are welcome to try it and help us improve it. Each report includes an opportunity to tell us:
- which parts appear accurate;
- where something has been misunderstood;
- what may be missing;
- whether any wording or recommendations are unclear.
Your feedback will help us assess how accurately the screener reflects different children and young people and improve future versions.
